Can my spouse and I actually work out together if we're at different fitness levels?

Can my spouse and I actually work out together if we're at different fitness levels? — Boom Fitness Culture, coached strength and conditioning in Lehi and Pleasant Grove, Utah
Yes, and the fitness gap matters less than people expect. In a coached class everyone does the same workout scaled to their own strength and experience, so a couple can train side by side in the same 50 minutes — one using 95 pounds, one using 45 — and both get an appropriate session. What usually breaks couples training together isn't the gap, it's one partner coaching the other.

The gap isn't the problem

We hear this constantly: "He's been lifting for ten years and I've never touched a barbell." Or the reverse, increasingly.

In a coached class the workout is written once and scaled to each person. Same movements, same time, different loads and different variations. A push-up happens on the floor or on a box. A deadlift is 225 pounds or an empty bar. Nobody is waiting on anybody, and nobody is doing a watered-down version off in the corner.

That's the thing an open gym floor can't give you. On a floor, the more experienced partner is either training their own program or babysitting — and neither of those makes for a good evening.

The actual thing that goes wrong

One partner coaches the other. It never works.

It doesn't matter how well-meant it is or how right they are. Getting technique corrections from your spouse lands differently than getting them from a coach, and it turns a workout you were doing together into a dynamic you were trying to get away from.

The fix is simple and it's the main reason couples do well here: let the coach coach. You're there together, you're not responsible for each other's form, and you get to just be two people who worked out. Afterward you can talk about literally anything else.

What we see actually work

PatternWhy it works
Same class, no commentaryYou share the experience without either person being in charge of the other.
Pick the time first, not the workoutCouples who lock a standing time — the 5:30 on Monday, Wednesday, Friday — stick far longer than couples who plan session by session.
Let each person have their own numbersThe moment it becomes a comparison it becomes a competition, and somebody starts losing at their own hobby.
One of you can skip without it collapsingIf the whole plan depends on both showing up, one sick kid ends the streak. Go alone when you have to.

What about the kids

Kidcare is included with an Unlimited membership — Lehi Monday–Friday 8–10am, Pleasant Grove Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9–10am. For couples with young kids, the morning slot is often the only one that exists — evenings belong to dinner, homework and bedtime.

If your schedule only allows evenings, the honest answer is to tag-team: one of you takes the 5:30 class, the other takes the later one, and the 24/7 door code covers whoever ends up training after bedtime.

Teens

Parents ask about bringing older kids in. Reach out and ask — it depends on age, the class and the day, and we'd rather have that conversation than give you a blanket answer that turns out wrong at the door. Call (801) 362-6315.

The part nobody puts in the brochure

Couples who train together tend to stay members longer. Not because of anything romantic — because it's harder to skip when someone is already in the car. Accountability you didn't have to manufacture is the most underrated feature of training with someone you live with.

The free week works for two. Come together and see whether it's actually your thing before anybody commits.

Frequently asked

Can my partner and I do the same class at different fitness levels?

Yes. Coached classes scale the same workout to each person — different loads and variations, same 50 minutes, no one waiting on anyone.

Is there childcare so we can work out together?

Yes — included with an Unlimited membership. Lehi runs Monday–Friday 8–10am; Pleasant Grove runs Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9–10am. Hours are subject to change.

Can we get a couples or family rate?

Ask us directly at (801) 362-6315 — we'd rather give you a real answer for your situation than publish a number that doesn't fit it.

What if only one of us can make it some days?

Come anyway. The memberships are individual and the class runs either way — plans that require both people every time are the ones that fall apart.
