Tesamorelin is the only growth hormone peptide with FDA approval. Here's what that actually means

What it's actually approved for
Tesamorelin is approved to reduce excess visceral abdominal fat in adults living with HIV who have lipodystrophy — a specific fat redistribution condition associated with HIV and certain antiretroviral therapies. It remains the only treatment in the United States with that indication.
It works as a growth hormone releasing factor analogue: it stimulates the body's own GH production, which in turn acts on visceral fat.
Read the limitations, because they're the story
The label is unusually direct. Tesamorelin is not indicated for weight loss. It is also not indicated for improving adherence to antiretroviral therapy. And the labeling notes that long-term cardiovascular safety has not been established.
That is a drug that went through the full process — trials, review, approval — and came out the other side with a tightly drawn indication and an explicit warning about what it isn't for.
Why this one matters more than the others
Here's the part worth sitting with.
Tesamorelin did the thing. It ran the trials, it demonstrated an effect on a defined population with a measurable endpoint, and it earned approval. And what it earned was narrow: one condition, one population, with the label actively warning against extending it to general weight loss.
Now compare that to every other compound in this category. BPC-157, TB-500, CJC-1295, ipamorelin — none of them have done this. Not because the science is being suppressed, but because the trials haven't been run and finished. The marketing for those compounds routinely promises more than tesamorelin's label allows, and tesamorelin is the one that actually passed.
When the approved drug is the most cautious voice in the room, that should recalibrate how you read everything else.
And it's still banned in sport
Tesamorelin is prohibited under WADA S2.2 as a GHRH analogue, at all times. It is one of the few in this category where a therapeutic use exemption has a realistic path — but only for documented HIV-associated lipodystrophy, which is to say, for the thing it's actually approved for.
What we take from this at Boom
We're a gym. We coach people, and we're honest about the line between what a coach knows and what a physician knows.
What tesamorelin teaches is a standard you can apply yourself to anything you're offered: what exactly is it approved for, in whom, and what does its own label say it is not for? If a compound can't answer the first question at all, that isn't a conspiracy — it's an answer.
And the unglamorous truth underneath all of it: visceral fat responds to consistent training, adequate protein, decent sleep and a sustainable calorie deficit. That's available to everyone reading this, requires no prescription, and has more evidence behind it than anything else in this article.
Read this first. This article is education, not medical advice, and not a recommendation to take anything. Every compound named here requires a licensed medical provider who has reviewed your history and can order labs. Nothing here is a protocol, and no doses appear anywhere in it on purpose. Regulatory and anti-doping status is current as of September 2026 and changes.
Frequently asked
Is tesamorelin FDA approved?
Yes — approved in 2010 to reduce excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy. That is its only approved indication.
Can tesamorelin be used for weight loss?
Its label explicitly states it is not indicated for weight loss. It was approved for a specific fat-redistribution condition in a specific population.
Why is tesamorelin approved when other peptides aren't?
Because the clinical trials were run and completed for a defined indication. The other popular peptides in this category have not completed that process.
Is tesamorelin allowed in competition?
No. It is prohibited under WADA S2.2 at all times, though a therapeutic use exemption has a realistic path for documented HIV lipodystrophy.
