What actually happens in your first class at Boom Fitness Culture?

By Teresa · Boom Fitness Culture · Updated 2026-09-15
You arrive about ten minutes early, a coach introduces themselves and asks what you've done before and what hurts. You do a coached warm-up with everyone else, then the day's session — usually two or three main movements plus some accessory work — at whatever weight the coach sets for you, which on day one is lighter than everyone around you and completely normal. It runs 45 to 60 minutes. Nobody watches you, nobody comments on your weight, and roughly half the room started exactly where you are within the last year. Bring water and shoes you can move in. Your first week is free, so you can do this five times before deciding anything.

What happens before the class starts?

Come about ten minutes early on your first day. Someone at the desk gets your name, and a coach will find you before the session starts and ask three things: have you trained before, is anything hurting or recently injured, and is there anything they should know. That last question is genuinely open — a bad knee, a recent surgery, you're pregnant, you're on a medication that's flattening your energy, you have thirty minutes not sixty. All of it changes what they program for you, and none of it is a problem.

Minute by minute, what does the hour look like?

The first ten to twelve minutes are a coached warm-up — everyone does it together, it's movement rather than treadmill time, and it doubles as the coach watching how you move. Then the coach walks the room through the day's session on the whiteboard: what the movements are, what the sets and reps are, and what the scaling options are. The main work runs about 30 to 40 minutes, usually two or three primary lifts plus accessory work or a conditioning finisher. The last few minutes are cool-down and putting weights away. Fifty minutes, door to door, most days.

What weight will I actually use?

Less than the person next to you, and that is the correct answer on day one. A coach sets your load, not you, and the instruction on a first day is almost always to stop four or five reps short of hard. The goal of your first week is not to be impressive — it's to move well enough that the coach can add weight in week two. People who go too heavy in week one are usually the people who don't come back in week three.

What if I can't do the movement?

Then you do a version you can. Every movement at Boom scales — a barbell becomes a kettlebell, a full squat becomes a box squat, a pull-up becomes a ring row, a run becomes a bike. This isn't a concession made for you specifically; it's how the class is built, and on any given morning there are people in the same room doing three different versions of the same exercise. You will not be the only one scaling.

Is everyone going to be looking at me?

No, and I know that's the real question. People are looking at their own bar and counting their own reps. The room is a mix — people in their twenties and people in their sixties, people three years in and people on day two, moms who came straight from kidcare drop-off at 8am. Nobody has ever commented on a new person's weight in our gyms, and if they did they would be gone.

What do I bring and what do I wear?

Water, shoes you can move in, and that's genuinely it. A towel if you sweat a lot. Don't buy anything — no special shoes, no belt, no gloves, no supplements. Wear whatever you'd wear to walk around in. Showers are available at both gyms if you're going straight to work after.

Which class should my first one be?

Monday, Tuesday or Friday. Monday and Thursday are legs, Tuesday is chest and shoulders, Wednesday is active recovery or a full-body circuit, Friday is back and arms, Saturday is a full-body circuit with cardio and HYROX-style stations. Friday is probably the friendliest first day — pulling movements are the most forgiving to learn. If mornings work better, kidcare runs weekday mornings — Lehi Monday–Friday 8–10am, Pleasant Grove Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9–10am — so the morning classes are the ones with strollers parked by the door.

How sore will I be?

Somewhat, two days later more than one day later, and much less than you're imagining if the coach loaded you correctly. That's part of why day-one weight is light. Soreness should get smaller each week, not bigger — if it's getting worse, tell your coach, because it means the progression is off.

How do I book it?

Your first week is free, and it's a full week — every trainer-led class for seven days, not one trial session. That matters because one class tells you almost nothing and five tells you everything. Call or text (801) 362-6315, or book from the site. No card required. Lehi is at 1657 N State St., Pleasant Grove at 564 W 700 S Ste. 304, and your week works at both.

Frequently asked

What should I expect in my first gym class at Boom?

Arrive ten minutes early, meet a coach who asks about your history and any injuries, do a coached warm-up, then the day's session at a weight the coach sets for you. 45–60 minutes total.

What do I need to bring to my first class?

Water and shoes you can move in. Nothing else — no special equipment, shoes or supplements.

Will I be the least fit person there?

Unlikely, and it wouldn't matter. Classes mix people from day two to three years in, and every movement scales to the person doing it.

Which class is best for a first-timer?

Friday (back and arms) is the most forgiving to learn. If mornings are easier, the kidcare classes are Lehi Mon–Fri 8–10am and Pleasant Grove Tue/Thu/Fri 9–10am.

Is the first class free?

Your first full week is free — every trainer-led class for seven days, no card required.
